SEO Explained for People with Real Jobs: Revisited

 

 

In 2008 I wrote an article called “SEO Explained for People with Real Jobs.”  The basis of the article was the surprise I continue to find when I talk to very successful business owners who don’t really understand what SEO is and why it’s important.

The article then went on to try and explain SEO in a manner that a business owner could understand it – and give some practical advice on what it means.  And, by and large, I think the article was a success.  I received emails and call from all over the country and a year later the article still shows up on more than 800 websites and blogs.


Fast Forward to 2010

Just this week I walked out of a meeting and the realization hit me that a year after writing that article – things have gotten WORSE, not better, for the average business owner in terms of trying to make sense of all this.

Because during that meeting, a very successful business owner told me “I really don’t know what I need, but I know I need help with Google.”  He had tried a few things, written a few articles but really didn’t understand why he had been given that advice or why it wasn’t working.

And when I look at what’s out there facing those of us who work in the search marketing field – it’s definitely getting more complicated.  So I understand why the average business owners are feeling frustrated, and I genuinely want to help.

 

Not to be confused with “expert advice”

So in the spirit of giving back, I am putting together a series of “SEO explained for….” articles on the topics that seem to be the most mysterious to today’s business owners and managers.  My hope is that I can help people understand the basics so they can make good decisions regarding their business and the money they invest into projects like websites and online marketing.

However, let me be clear to the “experts” out there who may try to blast me – these articles are NOT intended to be an expert’s discussion of the topics.  Rather, the point is to explain each topic in a manner that a business person (who has a real job and isn’t especially technically inclined) so they can understand what it means in their business and what they should do about it.
